“People Are Down on What They Are Not Up On” – Zig Ziglar

Clearly what Zig meant by that is when you know little or nothing or are not totally conversant with the COMPLETE in’s and out’s of something you tend to knock it.

It’s similar to the advice I give my coaching clients, and that is don’t bother trying to explain the “way we do things”. Frankly you are wasting your time and no amount of money should interest you in the task.

I’m often asked silly questions like “Does mail order work?”, “Can you make money while you sleep on the internet?”, “Can you really build a business quickly and sell it for lots of money?”.

The answer of course is yes but IT’S THE QUESTION THAT’S WRONG. The question should have been “What do I need to know so I can make mail order work? Make money while I sleep on the internet? Build a business quickly and sell it for lots of money?”

You need to dare to spit in the eye of the village witch.

Personally I’ve been doing it all my life, something my coaching clients happily do daily. They ignore and violate industry norms, are immune to criticism and rules created by mere mortals.

Sadly most people fear the village witch. They live quiet lives of discontent painfully avoiding getting her attention in fear of provoking her. Walt Disney ignored all the so called expert advice and built the first amusement park with one carpark, one entrance and one exit. Richard Branson continues defy all customary boundaries and restrictions placed on him by whatever industry he chooses.

Strangely folk-like Disney and Branson are celebrated after their success. Others who fail are frowned upon, shot at dawn, tarred and feathered, then boiled in oil. THERE IS A DANGER and it needs to be recognised and respected. I’m not advocating you go looking for trouble, in fact, I believe I am a businessman first and an entrepreneur second… that means I must always consider the consequences of my actions and make my decisions accordingly.

It is however difficult to live a prosperous life being fearful and timid. Instead I believe you should have a “healthy” paranoia.

Henry Kissinger once said “There can be no more crises this week, I’m fully booked.”

I’ve just described the life of most entrepreneurs. What’s important is how they deal with it. Most mortal folk can’t cut it. That’s one reason why it’s lonely at the top, after all, the road that an entrepreneur chooses is not an easy one and you must become immune to criticism and have little need to be understood.

Entrepreneurs, although the lifeblood of our society are rarely recognised or applauded for their efforts. A succession of governments continue to burden entrepreneurs with unfair and excessive taxes, rules and regulations that make it more difficult day by day to achieve their entrepreneurial dreams. Alphabet agencies, regulators and lawyers pile on obstacles and red tape. That’s why I want to recognise the entrepreneur with an award. Let’s call it “The Civilian Medal of Honour”. I applaud you! But don’t expect anybody else to.
